Agriculture and Livelihoods Program

Our Mission

At RuWERA CBO, we believe that sustainable agriculture is key to empowering rural women and girls. Our Agriculture and Livelihoods program is designed to equip women and girls with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to thrive in agribusiness, improve food security, and increase household incomes. By promoting climate-smart farming techniques, organic farming, and agro-processing, we ensure long-term sustainability in rural communities.

Key Initiatives

Sustainable Farming Practices

Training on environmentally friendly agricultural techniques, such as crop rotation, organic farming, and soil conservation, which help improve yields and protect the environment.

Livestock Management

Teaching women and girls effective livestock management practices, including animal husbandry, breeding, and health management, to enhance income generation.

Agro-Processing and Value Addition

Providing skills on turning raw agricultural products into value-added goods, such as processing fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, to boost income and reduce post-harvest losses.

Market Access and Business Support

Connecting participants with markets to sell their products and providing training on business management, marketing, and financial literacy to help them grow their agribusinesses.

Climate-Smart Agriculture

Promoting practices that reduce the negative effects of climate change, such as water conservation techniques, drought-resistant crops, and renewable energy solutions for farming activities.

Key Data & Justification

Women in Agriculture

According to the FAO, women in rural areas account for 43% of the agricultural workforce but often lack equal access to land, credit, and training.

Impact on Food Security

Empowering women in agriculture has been proven to increase food security, reduce poverty, and improve nutrition within households, thus contributing to community resilience.

Agriculture in Kenya

In Kenya, agriculture remains a cornerstone of the economy, with over 70% of the rural population relying on agriculture for their livelihoods. Supporting women in this sector helps to build economic resilience at the family and community levels.
