RuWERA Community-Based Organization (CBO) began its journey on May 10, 2015, as a small women's group in Katito, Nyakach Sub-County, Kisumu County, Kenya. Established by a group of visionary women, the organization was founded to address the pressing challenges faced by rural women and girls in their community, such as poverty, limited education opportunities, and social marginalization.
Driven by a shared vision of empowerment and resilience, the group focused on equipping women with skills and knowledge in sustainable agriculture and income-generating activities. This initial effort soon grew beyond the scope of a local women’s group, driven by the increasing demand for broader community impact.
On August 22, 2018, the group was officially registered as a Community-Based Organization, adopting the name RuWERA, an acronym for Rural Women Empowerment and Rights Action. This marked a pivotal moment in its history, enabling RuWERA to expand its reach and formalize its programs to address the interconnected challenges of agriculture, education, leadership, and wellbeing for women and girls in rural Kenya.
RuWERA’s programs evolved to include scholarships for girls, leadership training for women, and holistic health initiatives that address mental and reproductive health needs. Over the years, the organization has grown into a trusted community partner, empowering thousands of women and girls to overcome systemic barriers and thrive.
Guided by the founding members’ passion for change and the resilience of the women it serves, RuWERA continues to transform lives and communities through sustainable initiatives. At its core, RuWERA remains committed to its mission: empowering rural women and girls for a sustainable future.
